A Surprise Turn of Events at the New Venture Championship

Congratulations to the all the participating teams of the 2008 New Venture Champion. The 17th annual NVC involved both intriguing products and intelligent business plans, but there can only be one grand prize winner.

The 2008 NVC Champion of $50,000 is…
… Wait there’s been a first in NVC history here…
“The judges decided that there will be no second place,” said Randy Swangard. So for the first time ever, there are co-champions. The New Venture Championship is combining the first and second place cash prizes and splitting it between the two to award each team $30,000. It is more than either team expected to leave the competition with.
Let me present to you, the co-champions of the 2008 New Venture Championship:

$30,000 Co-winner: Klymit from Brigham Young University
Klymit™ has developed a patent-pending, revolutionary form of adjustable insulation technology, which utilizes inert, noble gases.
Team: Nate Alder and Ben Maughan, Faculty Advisor: Nathan Furr
$30,000 Co-winner: TakeShape from the University of Oregon
TakeShape plans to license a patented, 3D body scanner to sell to institutional sports teams.
Team: Cody Stavig, Peter Vomocil, Bill Sedlak and Andrew Earle, Faculty Advisors: Don Upson and Al Cochrane
$5,000 Third Place Winner

ElectriSense from Georgia Institute of Technology
Team: TJ Patel and Erich Stuntebeck, Faculty Advisor: Kathleen Kurre
$2,500 Runner-up: Comuto from INSEAD
$2,500 Runner-up: COR Innovations from Stanford University
Other awards include:
- OEN Lightning Round Awards of $1,500 (5): Advotech from University of Manitoba, Pickple from Hanyang University, Motifleet from Boise State University, MadWise from University of South Carolina and OvaGuard from Thammasat University
- Tektronix Elevator Pitch Winner of $1,000: Boreas Snowboards from University of Georgia
- Tektronix Elevator Pitch Runners-up: OvaGuard from Thammasat University and WeSpeak from University of Texas at Austin
- Tektronix Trade Show Winner of $1,000: Klymit from Brigham Young University
- Palo Alto Best Written Plan Award of $1,500: Klymit from Brigham Young University
- IPC Original Innovation Award of $1,000: Pickple from Hanyang University
